Touring the Gettysburg Battlefield by Day
See the Gettysburg battlefield before your ghost tour: horse-drawn carriage, private licensed guide in your car, or a downtown walk, plus park hours, fees and timing.
Night is for the ghost stories, but the battlefield itself is a daytime visit. The National Park Service opens the park grounds 30 minutes before sunrise and closes them 30 minutes after sunset, which is why every ghost tour in Gettysburg stays in the town. Plan the field by day and the town by night.

What does it cost to visit the battlefield?
Nothing to enter. The battlefield and the Museum and Visitor Center are free; the paid part is the film, Cyclorama and museum ticket at $20.75 for adults, $19.75 for seniors and veterans, and $15.75 for children aged 6 to 12 (National Park Service, checked October 2026). The park’s self-guided auto tour is free too.
Do you need a guide?
You can drive the auto tour on your own, but the field is 6,000 acres of farmland with few obvious landmarks, and the story of three days of fighting is hard to follow from markers alone. Licensed Battlefield Guides have been tested on the battle since 1915, and a good one turns a quiet field into a place where you know exactly what happened.

Why the carriage wins for most visitors
The horse-drawn carriage battlefield tour (4.8 from 1,114 reviews, from $85 (GetYourGuide, checked October 2026)) moves at the pace of the 1860s, which is exactly the point: you see the ground the way the armies did, with a licensed guide answering questions for two hours. It is outdoors in all weather and not suitable for wheelchair users. Parking is included.
The carriage adds what a car window cannot: time, height and a guide whose whole attention is on your small group.

For a deeper dive, the private licensed guide tour (4.9 from 469 reviews, from $95 per group up to 6 (GetYourGuide, checked October 2026)) lets you choose the focus, from the first day’s fighting to Pickett’s Charge. The 1863 downtown walking tour (4.9 from 355 reviews, from $25 (GetYourGuide, checked October 2026)) is the best preparation for an evening ghost walk, because it covers the same streets with the history only.
When to go
The battle anniversary in early July brings anniversary programs and crowds; autumn has cooler walking weather and the best ghost-tour season. Whatever the month, a day tour and an evening walk fit comfortably into one visit: compare the evening options in the best ghost tour in Gettysburg or read about the most haunted places first.

The horse-drawn carriage battlefield tour
Two hours across the battlefield in an open carriage with a licensed battlefield guide, small groups of up to ten, rain or shine.
